Types Of Renewal (Tajdīd) - Al-Albānī

السائل: ورد أن الله سبحانه وتعالى يبعث على رأس كل قرن هجري مجددًا لهذه الأمة فهل هذا صحيح أولًا؟

Questioner: There is a report that Allāh, Glorified and Exalted be He, raises up at the turn of every Hijrī century a renewer (mujaddid) for this Ummah — is this report, first of all, authentic?

وإن كان صحيحًا فما نوع التجديد الذي يتم على يد هذا المجدد؟

And if so, what is the nature of the renewal brought about by this renewer?

الشيخ: الحديث صحيح، والتجديد أنواع — هذا هو الصحيح في تفسير الحديث.

The Sheikh: The ḥadīth is authentic, and renewal is of various types — this is the sound interpretation of the ḥadīth.

فالإسلام يحتاج إلى تجديد كلما مضى عليه برهة من الزمن طويل أو قصير.

Islām stands in need of renewal whenever any stretch of time has passed over it, long or short.

وتجديد الإسلام يكون من نواحٍ متعددة أهمها تجديد مفاهيمه الصحيحة.

The renewal of Islām takes place on multiple fronts, the most important of which is renewing its correct understandings.

حيث ينحرف المسلمون مع الزمن عن فهم الإسلام كتابًا وسنةً فهمًا صحيحًا.

For with the passage of time, Muslims drift away from a sound grasp of Islām — its Book and its Sunnah alike.

فأعظم تجديد هو هذا المجدد الذي يأتي إلى المسلمين بالمفاهيم الصحيحة التي كان عليها سلفنا الصالح لنصوص الكتاب والسنة.

The greatest renewal, therefore, is that of the renewer who comes to the Muslims bearing the correct understandings that our Righteous Predecessors (Salaf aṣ-Ṣāliḥ) held regarding the texts of the Book and the Sunnah.

ومن هذا التجديد الأهم هو أن يصفّي السنة مما دخل فيها مما ليس منها.

Central to this most vital form of renewal is also that he cleanse the Sunnah of what has crept into it that does not belong to it.

ثم هو يدعو المسلمين إلى الاعتماد على هذه السنة الصحيحة مع القرآن ومع ذاك البيان الصحيح لكل منهما الذي كان عليه سلفنا الصالح.

Then he calls the Muslims to ground themselves in this authenticated Sunnah alongside the Qurʾān, together with the sound understanding of both that our Righteous Predecessors were upon.

هذا التجديد وهو أهم تجديد، ولا تقوم قائمة المسلمين وقائمة الحركات الإسلامية والدعوات الإسلامية كلها والأحزاب الإسلامية كلها إلا إذا بُنيت على هذا التجديد الأصيل.

This is the renewal, and it is the most important of all. Muslims cannot find their footing — nor can Islamic movements, Islamic daʿwah efforts, or Islamic parties — unless they are built upon this foundational renewal.

تجديد السنة بتمييز ما ليس منها وطرحها جانبًا، وتجديد المفاهيم الصحيحة لنصوص الكتاب والسنة لدعوة المسلمين إلى المفاهيم التي كان عليها سلفنا الصالح.

Renewing the Sunnah — by identifying what does not belong to it and setting it aside — and renewing the correct understandings of the texts of the Book and Sunnah in order to call Muslims to the understandings that our Righteous Predecessors held.

لكن هذا في الواقع لا يكفي.

This, however, is not sufficient in itself.

لا بد هناك من تجديد لعلوم أخرى يتطلب تطور الحياة العلمية والاجتماعية أن يتوجه بعض الناس إلى تجديدها.

There must also be renewal in other fields of knowledge that the advancement of scholarly and social life demands certain people dedicate themselves to.

ونضرب على ذلك مثلًا علم اللغة.

Take, for example, the science of the Arabic language.

فهذا العلم لا بد من التجديد فيه وتقريبه إلى الناس حتى العرب أنفسهم الذين ابتعدوا قليلًا أو كثيرًا عن لغتهم بسبب العجمة التي تسرّبت إليهم.

This discipline is in need of renewal and of being made accessible to people — even to the Arabs themselves, who have drifted to varying degrees from their own language as a result of the foreign linguistic influence (ʿujma) that has seeped into them.

فلا بد إذًا من تجديد هذا العلم.

Renewal of this science is therefore indispensable.

وكذلك يقال: لا بد من تجديد النواحي التربوية والنفسية وتوجيه المسلمين إلى ما يوافق الكتاب والسنة من هذه النواحي كلها.

Likewise, renewal of educational and psychological approaches is necessary, guiding Muslims across all these domains toward what conforms to the Book and the Sunnah.

ولا شك أن فردًا بل جماعةً لا تستطيع أن تقوم بكل هذه الجهود وهذه التجديدات.

There is no doubt that neither a single individual nor even a group can shoulder all of these efforts and undertake all of these renewals.

ولذلك ذكر بعض العلماء — كمثال لأنواع التجديد — من المجددين صلاح الدين الأيوبي.

For this reason, some scholars mentioned — by way of illustrating the types of renewal — Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn al-Ayyūbī among the renewers.

مع أن الرجل لم يكن مشهورًا بالعلم.

Even though he was not known for his religious scholarship.

ولكن لما جدّد الحياة الإسلامية بأن حثّهم على الجهاد وحملهم على مقاتلة الأعداء وإخراجهم من البلاد بعد أن احتلوها سنين طويلة، فاعتبروه من جملة المجددين.

But because he renewed Islamic life by rousing the Muslims to jihād, leading them to fight the enemies, and driving them from the lands after they had occupied them for many long years, the scholars counted him among the renewers.

فإذًا التجديد لا يُحصر في ناحية دون أخرى.

 

Renewal, then, is not to be confined to one domain at the expense of another.

فما دامت الحياة تتجدد فلا بد أيضًا من أن تتجدد العلوم وأن تنشأ هذه العلوم وفق الكتاب والسنة الصحيحة وعلى المفهوم الذي كان عليه سلفنا الصالح رضي الله عنهم.

As long as life itself keeps renewing, the sciences too must be renewed and must develop in accordance with the authentic Book and Sunnah, upon the understanding that our Righteous Predecessors — may Allāh be pleased with them all — were upon.
