Teaching By Way Of Question And Answer - Al-Albaany
The shaykh: The methods of learning and seeking knowledge are many and varied. Among them is one that is mentioned explicitly in the Book of Allaah and in the hadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah, salla-llaahu 'alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam. It is the method of question and answer. Allaah, Exalted and Holy He is, says plainly in His Book: { So ask the people of remembrance if you do not know }, and He says: { So ask about it one who is well informed }.
Our Prophet, salawaatu-llaahi wa salaamuhu 'alayhi, said in a well-known story in the Sunan: "Why did they not ask when they were ignorant? As the cure for ignorance is to ask". He said this, alayhi as-salaatu was-salaam, when one of the Companions was injured during a military expedition that he undertook with the Companions of the Prophet, salla-llaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. He suffered many wounds, then at night he had a wet dream. When morning came he asked those around him whether he had a concession to avoid ghusl because of his injuries.
They answered him: You must perform ghusl. So he performed it and it caused his death and destruction. When the news reached the Messenger of Allaah, salla-llaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, he became extremely angry and said: "They killed him, may Allaah deal with them. Why did they not ask when they were ignorant? As the cure for ignorance is to ask".
What is its remedy and medicine of ignorance? Asking.
Often knowledge sought through questions and answers is more beneficial for many students than delivering lectures or fiqh lessons, because those lessons may contain things that do not matter to the listeners. Questions are different, because each person presents what concerns him in his life and his acts of worship. Based on this, we have followed for decades the practice of allowing our brothers, the students of knowledge, to put forward their questions so that we can answer them according to what Allaah makes easy for us. If we have knowledge of the matter, we answer; otherwise, as you know, half of knowledge is saying "I do not know". So, let the brother assigned to present the questions proceed.
